Inside FRISS's B Corp Journey: People & Purpose
Aug 28, 2025
When FRISS became a Certified B Corporation earlier this year, we marked the milestone with pride. But the real story is less about the certification and more about what happens next. For us, life as a B Corp is less about displaying a badge and more about the choices, practices, and culture that brings the certification to life every day.
Why B Corp Matters at FRISS
B Lab’s B Corp certification provides a global framework to measure a company's overall social and environmental responsibility performance alongside its financial success.
Companies must earn a minimum verified score of 80 points on the B Impact Assessment (BIA). They must also commit to legal accountability for all stakeholders, moving beyond a sole focus on shareholders. Furthermore, they must provide B Lab with the transparency required to verify they meet every standard. It evaluates a company's impact across governance, workers, community, environment, and customers, holding businesses accountable for their broader influence.
That framework aligns closely with our mission to make insurance more honest and fair through responsible AI. Fraud detection should protect people, not exploit them. Becoming a B Corp pushed us to prove those beliefs with measurable, transparent practices.
Standards continue to evolve, too. In April 2025, B Lab introduced stricter certification criteria focused on driving meaningful action in key impact areas. We welcome this shift, because our industry depends on building, and maintaining, trust.
From Principles to Practice
Certification was just the starting line. Post-certification we’ve focused on putting B Corp values into action across our operations.
Responsible AI in Action
Trust underpins everything in insurance. At FRISS, we use the B Corp framework to guide how we develop and apply AI. That means holding ourselves accountable to use technology transparently, ethically, and in ways that reduce bias and protect people. We continue to refine how we test and validate our models so that decisions remain fair, policyholders experience less friction, and carriers gain tools that help them protect the customers who need them most.
A Culture Led by Employees
We’ve leaned into an employee-powered approach to inclusion and belonging. Our People and Culture committee identifies barriers and drives solutions, from inclusive hiring training to policy updates that reflect modern realities. The goal is simple: a workplace where people can contribute at their best, grow their careers, and feel seen.
Smarter Sustainability
We’re rethinking the way we operate to lower our environmental impact. From limiting unnecessary travel to exploring ways to reduce our digital footprint, we aim to make sustainability a natural part of how we do business, not an afterthought.
Giving Back to Communities
Every FRISS employee now has dedicated time each year to volunteer. Whether mentoring in the insurance industry, supporting local nonprofits, or contributing to global causes, service has become part of our work culture. Giving back benefits our communities, and it sharpens our empathy as a team.
The People Behind the Purpose
A business's culture doesn’t come from policies; it comes from people. At FRISS, individuals bring our B Corp values to life in inspiring ways that align with the pillars of certification.
Julie has transformed her personal habits to reduce waste and energy use, from eliminating single-use plastics to supporting certified B Corp and cruelty-free companies. By lowering her personal footprint, she reflects the Environmental Pillar of B Corp. She shows how small, intentional actions add to meaningful positive impact on the planet.
Emma recently reached her 25th blood donation. Each donation can potentially save up to three lives. By dedicating just an hour on her lunch break, she embodies the Community Pillar. Proving how simple but powerful contributions can come from everyday choices that strengthen society.
Jackie has volunteered in Ottawa’s cancer community since 2018, drawing on her experience as a young breast cancer survivor to support others. She facilitates support groups, fundraises, and builds connections that provide hope during difficult times. Her commitment reflects both the Workers and Community Pillars, by using her lived experience to improve the wellbeing of others.
These stories highlight that being a B Corp is not some abstract business model but a set of principles lived every day by the people of FRISS.
Lessons for Other Companies
You don’t need a certificate to start living B Corp values. Many of the most meaningful steps are free, practical, and achievable at any stage:
Use the B Impact Assessment. This free tool helps you evaluate your impact and identify areas for growth.
Build a cross-functional task force. Bring together employees from different departments to drive initiatives from within.
Involve employees early. Create open spaces for dialogue around values, sustainability, and inclusion.
Celebrate progress, not perfection. Share wins and challenges openly to keep momentum strong.
The Harder Truth
The certification process is challenging by design. We faced challenges in aligning global policies with local realities, gathering consistent data, and debating where to set priorities. But every friction point became a chance to grow stronger as an organization.
What’s Next
B Corp certification lasts three years, but we view accountability is continuous. We’ve set internal benchmarks tied to B Lab’s five impact areas, and we’ll be reviewing our progress regularly. Transparency is central. We will share updates openly, because accountability builds trust.
Looking ahead, we’re focused on:
Expanding trustworthy AI practices with even greater transparency and fairness checks to improve customer impact.
Continuing to improve people policies that scale with care and inclusion.
Pushing for smarter sustainability in how we travel, work, and use digital resources.
Strengthening community partnerships where our expertise and people can make a real difference.
Purpose Is a Team Sport
B Corp certification sharpened our focus without changing our core. We believe the stories of our people living these values are more important than the score itself. Our goal is to be a business that is a force for good.
Any organization, be it a startup, scaleup, or global enterprise, can embark on this path without waiting for formal certification. Start with your existing operations, build momentum with your team, and share your progress transparently. We are here to share lessons from our own journey.
